About PGT
Poppy Growers Tasmania Inc is the representative organisation for Tasmania's licensed pharmaceutical poppy growers.
PGT represents approximately 85% of growers across Tasmania.
Our purpose is to ensure growers have an effective voice in the decisions affecting their farms and their industry.
Our purpose
We work with growers and engage with government, regulators, processors, researchers and agricultural organisations on their behalf.
Growing pharmaceutical poppies sits at the intersection of agriculture, pharmaceutical production, international markets and government regulation.
Decisions made across each of these areas can have practical consequences on farm.
PGT provides a coordinated grower perspective so those consequences are understood when industry decisions, regulations and government policies are developed.
We listen to growers, identify shared concerns and opportunities, and represent those interests through industry discussions, government consultation and formal policy processes.
Industry relationships
Different organisations have distinct responsibilities within Tasmania's pharmaceutical poppy industry.
Licensed farmers cultivate poppy crops under contract with licensed processing companies.
PGT represents growers and advocates on matters affecting their businesses and the industry.
Licensed processors contract production from growers and process harvested poppy material for pharmaceutical supply chains.
The Tasmanian Government and the Poppy Advisory and Control Board administer the regulatory framework governing commercial poppy cultivation and crop security.
PGT works constructively with each part of the industry while remaining the representative organisation for growers.
Governance
PGT is governed by growers from across Tasmania's poppy-growing regions.
Committee members volunteer their time to represent local growers, contribute to PGT policy and ensure issues affecting different parts of the state are heard.
The Committee of Management works with the Chief Executive to determine PGT's priorities and represent growers to industry and government.
