PGT exists to ensure the experience and interests of growers are represented when decisions affecting their farms and industry are made.
We consult with growers, identify common issues and work constructively with government, regulators, processors, researchers and agricultural organisations.
Representation
Agricultural policy and regulation can have direct consequences for how a farm operates.
PGT participates in government consultations, regulatory discussions and industry processes to ensure the practical effects on growers are understood.
Our role is not to oppose regulation.
It is to help ensure regulation achieves its purpose while remaining practical, proportionate and workable in real farming conditions.
Case study
A recent example involved Tasmania's pre-planting approval arrangements.
Growers and processors identified that agricultural conditions could sometimes require a farmer to change the paddock intended for planting at relatively short notice.
PGT raised these practical concerns through the regulatory process.
Changes subsequently approved by the Poppy Advisory and Control Board provided growers with greater flexibility while maintaining appropriate regulatory oversight.
This reflects an important part of PGT's role: bringing practical grower experience into decisions affecting the industry.
Collaboration
Agriculture continually adapts to changing diseases, biosecurity risks, production systems and technology.
PGT has participated in collaborative research with organisations including the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture, government agencies and industry partners.
Previous work has included research into systemic downy mildew, which emerged as a significant production challenge for Tasmanian poppy growers.
Research partnerships allow scientific expertise and practical farming experience to be combined to address challenges affecting the industry.
Shared responsibility
Tasmania's agricultural environment is an important asset. PGT has represented growers on biosecurity issues where pests, diseases or imported plant material could affect Tasmanian production. Effective biosecurity relies on cooperation between farmers, processors, researchers and government.
Public safety and crop security are fundamental to maintaining confidence in Tasmania's pharmaceutical poppy industry. PGT participates in industry discussions concerning matters such as crop security, poppy regrowth and responsible production. Growers, processors and regulators each retain their own responsibilities within the system.
Proposed themes
This should remain a simple, easily updated section of the website rather than permanent copy. Until the Committee approves a formal set of current priorities, the suggested themes are:

Supporting an industry in which Tasmanian farming businesses can continue to participate productively and competitively.
Supporting cooperation and research that improves crop performance and industry resilience.
Supporting measures that protect Tasmania's poppy production capability from pests, diseases and other biological risks.
